He is a goaltender who played from 2’000 to 2004 for the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League. Ward then played from 2004 to 2006 for Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League. In 2002, he was drafted by the National Hockey League Carolina Hurricanes at the age of 25. Ward began playing for the Hurricanes in 2005 and played there all his NHL career. He has also represented Canada in international competitions and won a Gold Medal at the 2007 World Championships and a Silver Medal at the 2008 World Championships. In 2006 Ward won the Conn Smythe Trophy for the defending MVP in the NHL playoffs and won with Carolina the 2006 NHL Stanley Cup Championship. He was chosen for the 2011 NHL all-star Game. Ward was the first starting rookie to win an NHL championship since Patrick Toy in 1986.
