While my college had done an excellent job recruiting me, I had no road map for what I was supposed to do once I made it to campus.
I’ve read enough dreary campus novels to know more than I ever wanted to about the punctured Oxbridge academic psyche, and feel as if I’ve been through a mid-life crisis dozens of times, purely because I’ve foolishly grabbed a paperback by an author I’ve vaguely heard of.
On a college campus, people should be equally free to be on campus, irrespective of their skin color.
On a college campus, one’s right to speak – or to be – must never be based on skin color.
One of the most horrifying and surprising evolutions we have witnessed among our widespread campus network is the rapid movement away from tolerating opposing ideas and respectful debate to the deployment of obscene bully tactics from the left.
The Google Quad Campus looks way too nice to sit on top of an active Superfund site: There are matching bikes, a pool with primary-colored umbrellas, and a contained universe that looks more like a college or a park than a satellite campus of one of the biggest companies in the world.
I ended up going to Furman. The campus was beautiful. It was, like, one of the top 10 college campuses on the planet. And they had dropped a ton of money into their psychology program, and I already knew that’s what I wanted to major in. I loved the people there; I very much felt at home.
Some of the speakers we bring on campus may not reflect official church teaching, but that’s how it is.
By no means do I anticipate screening those who come on to campus… And I have no difficulty if a bishop across the country or some local pastor may say that’s not Catholic teaching – that’s fine.
I always just forced myself to do crazy things in public. In college I would push an overhead projector across campus with my pants just low enough to show my butt. Then my friend would incite the crowd to be like, ‘Look at that idiot!’ That’s how I got over being shy.
The biggest thing for me is to be accessible. When a high school coach comes on our campus, they can sit in every position meeting they want to sit in. They can come to every practice. And the comments I’ve gotten from our high school coaches is how accessible we are to them. That’s what you need to do to build those relationships.
I liked Berkeley tremendously, Berkeley was a very leftist campus. I came to love that city as much as I love Paris or the south of France or New York.
By 1988, I’m seeing this commercial phenomenon beginning to show up. Hardware makers are selling routers to universities so they can build up their campus networks. So I remember thinking, ‘Well, how are we going to get this in the hands of the general public?’ There were no public Internet services at that point.
From a personal standpoint, I consider myself much more of an accidental entrepreneur. I was involved in the entrepreneurship club at Harvard, but I heard of it only because it was new on campus.
In New York alone, there was an average of more than 300 campus fires per year between 1997 and 2000, with roughly 160 of them annually in dormitories.
As many know, and especially those who may have young sons or daughters at colleges or universities, the last thing you want to hear is a call that perhaps one of your children was injured or, even worse, lost their life in a tragic fire at a dorm or campus housing.
I still vividly remember the moment I let go of an embrace with my daughter on her college campus – that, in her opinion, probably lasted far too long. I left the most precious thing in my life in the care of an institution, and that’s a very hard thing to do.
I think USC is not a glamour job. I think that’s an elite, elite job. Why? Within two hours of your campus you can get the best players in America, or as good as any.
I was given an opportunity to do sports in college and get a degree because of it. I ran track for the University of Texas and was studying to be a petroleum landman. And I was gifted an opportunity to audition for a film during my last semester in college, which I discovered while jogging around campus.
I know my curiosity as a writer and as a person makes me really interested in moving to parts of the country that I haven’t explored through writers’ festivals or through the kind of campus visits that I do on a regular basis and engaging with people who may be readers of poetry and may not.
I have been personally victimized by organized disruption of a public lecture on a university campus – at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Michigan State University, and Rhode Island’s Providence College, to name only a few.
For some reason the football coach of a major college program is seen as one of the leaders of the campus. And some way we have to let our young people know that that leader can look like anyone.
Just what is it that academics have to fear if they stand up for common decency, instead of letting campus barbarians run amok?
