I’ve got two parents, I don’t ride around with guns, and I’ve never put my hands on a woman. But the only team that believed me was the Cardinals.
You can’t put a price on what Mark McGwire brings to the Cardinals organization. The responsibility he accepts is as great as any number of home runs.
I totally respect the pope, and I totally respect the Catholic bishops and cardinals on doctrine.
Back in my day, we didn’t think about money as much. We enjoyed playing the game. We loved baseball. I didn’t think about anybody else but the Cardinals.
When there were just eight teams in each of the big leagues, I was always told, ‘It’s hard to come up, but it’s just hard to stay in the big leagues.’ That’s because there’s always somebody. The Cardinals had so many minor league clubs and had so many good ballplayers.

I got to Arizona in 1980, before the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Coyotes. The sun rose and set with the Phoenix Suns, and it wasn’t very spectacular. But I became a loyal fan and went to a lot of games.

My mom, Jacqueline, was Scots-Irish. They met in 1947 when dad played for the Houston Buffalos, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals.
