I think we’re in a new era of baseball where it’s not OK to have a lumbering slugger in the corner of the outfield not catching the ball, and not taking the extra base.
The thing is, I am addicted to social media. I can while away hours scrolling through posts and pictures, wallowing in the details of other people’s lives, catching up on news, giggling at funny videos, all the while oblivious to a sunny afternoon or the washing up.
I’m not doing one lucky punch or spinning kick and catching somebody. I’m going to own you – not beat you – own you from the first bell to the last bell.
When I first started playing basketball, my coordination was horrible! I went into high school at 6 feet and left at 6-7 and then grew another inch in college. Catching the ball, it was bad. I’ve always been pretty athletic, but when I got really tall, I just felt awkward.
Like catching a glimpse of the McDonald’s golden arches after a night out, when I see the blue and white Boots sign in the distance I feel comforted.
Standing in mass on Sundays with 500 other people, shaking hands with the people around you, catching the eye of small children, entertaining the prospect of causing a scene, to make them laugh, is an opportunity to feel part of something bigger than yourself, and rooted in your community.
You treat your body with the disrespect that you did as a young man and it starts catching up.
That I am today the face of Louis Vuitton almost seems like a twist of fate. You dream back to front, wanting the rewards before putting the work in. And then you work, get on with life, and just sometimes these childhood dreams have a way of catching up with you. This is a true privilege for which I am eternally grateful.
The catching position is hard. You have to find a way to do a lot of things, to be in the game. When you get older, when you’re 38 years old, you have to find a way to be on the field.
I’m interested in a lot. Like right now, I’m just really excited for ‘Catching Fire’ and ‘Mockingjay’ Part 1 and 2. But I love playing characters like Prim – I mean, Prim is like my dream character – but after ‘The Hunger Games’, it would be fun to look and see what else I could do well. But right now, Prim is like my dream role.
My biggest struggle being a woman in the workforce has not only been with my mother, my grandmother, and a lot of my girlfriends. When I’m working late hours, I’m almost punished for it by them. It’s almost absurd that I would prioritize work over catching up with my girlfriends. If I were a man, that would just come second nature.
The rich are always going to say that, you know, just give us more money and we’ll go out and spend more and then it will all trickle down to the rest of you. But that has not worked the last 10 years, and I hope the American public is catching on.
And political parties, overanxious for vote catching, become tolerant to intolerant groups.
Times are changing, and it’s catching on that the roles on TV and film need to reflect its diverse viewers.
I really like watching reruns of ‘The Crystal Maze.’ It’s something that I find weirdly comforting. If I ever have even a small amount of banknotes, I love to ‘Crystal Maze’ them by throwing them in the air and catching them. But it’s never as fun as it looks on TV.
RuPaul might not broadcast herself as political, but I think she tries to make moves in American history by catching more flies with honey than vinegar. Rather than telling people to vote, maybe she’ll do a mini-challenge on voting. She understands that you can influence people in a good way without preaching.
I think consistency, that’s one thing that I look back over my career. You could count on me catching around 80 balls a year or whatever, almost eight, nine touchdowns. And I only missed two games out of 17 years, I’m pretty proud of that, too.
Finesse is catching the baseball on the edge of your glove when you’re turning two, making the one-handed grabs and shoestring tackles by running across the field in football. And finesse is what I bring to fighting.
I had finally come to the point where I was catching the momentum but then I had torn my ACL, which is kind of the story of my life where I keep getting injured from an ACL.
